  The number three

It is interesting to note, in our lives, how important the number three is.  The number three is used everywhere.  For example, in baseball we have three strikes before your out, there are three bases from which to run to and from home.

In football, the all important decision to punt or run is made on the third down.  There were three wise men at Jesus birth, they gave three gifts.
It is at age three we learn the three most important things in life; to say please, thank you, and to take a nap each afternoon.

I'll bet if you took just a moment, you could think of a myriad of cases where we use the number three.  I would have to say other than the number one, that three is our most important number...

In trading futures, as in life, the number three becomes very important to us as well.

If you think about it, we use three lines for the fan principle, we have the 123 top and bottom formations, where we have three peaks.

The Dow and Elliott Wave Theory tell us that bear and bull markets have three major phases.  There are three different kinds of gaps.  The major reversal principles, the head and shoulders and the triple top formations also have three major peaks.
There are three different kinds of trends, major, secondary, and minor, not to mention the three trend directions, up, down, and sideways.

There are basically three types of triangles, symmetrical, ascending and descending.  Plus, we have three sources of market information - price, volume, and open interest.

Can you think of any other places where the number three is used in trading?  Just remember, when trading futures, to watch for the number three.  It can be an insightful key to the market, it's movement, and it's change in direction.

Thank you and good luck!

Sincerely,
Me, Myself and I.

Remember, hypothetical or simulated performance results have certain limitations. Unlike an actual performance record, simulated results do not represent actual trading. Also, since the trades have not actually been executed, the results may have over or under compensated for impact, if any, of certain market factors, such as lack of liquidity. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown. The risk of loss in trading futures and options can be substantial; therefore only genuine "risk" funds should be used in such trading. Futures and options may not be suitable investments for all individuals and individuals should carefully consider their financial condition in deciding whether to trade. Option traders should be aware that the exercise of a long option would result in a futures position.
